Traditional Hungarian dishes are flavourful, spicy and often rather heavy. The Hungarian dishes are based on old traditions in spicing and preparation methods. The main cuisine is goulash, which is, not a stew but a thick soup. You must try the fish soup, chicken paprika, a good home-made stew (pörkölt) and the goose liver. The most popular desserts are Gundel pancakes, Somlói dumplings and cooked chestnuts mashed and topped with whipped cream, called "gesztenyepüré".
Hungary is also famous for its aperitiv "Unicum", the Hungarian spirit, "pálinka" and its fine range of wines.
